Spain Digital Nomad Visa: 2026 Income Threshold and Application Path

September 2026: Plataforma ONE says 200% of SMI per month. Washington prints €2,442. Blogs that annualise 14 pays land near €2,849. Confirm with the post that handles your file.

If you Googled “Spain digital nomad visa income 2026” and one tab said €2,442 while another said ~€2,849, both camps are doing 200% of SMI — they just disagree on whether the monthly SMI is the €1,221 on the decree or that figure after you annualise 14 pays. This is the September 2026 file note: income math, visa versus in-country residence, Plataforma ONE, salary versus freelance, insurance, degree or three years’ experience, NIE. It is a sourced summary, not legal advice and not a permit in your passport.

The pain: one 200% rule, two monthly numbers

Nomad chats still paste a 2025 spreadsheet and call it the floor. Two of those screenshots will waste a consulate slot:

  • “The 2026 SMI is still last year’s number.” It is not. Real Decreto 126/2026 (BOE-A-2026-3815, published 19 February 2026) fixes the interprofessional minimum wage at €1,221 a month (or €40.70 a day). The decree’s own annual comparison floor is €17,094 — that is €1,221 × 14, the usual Spanish 12 monthly pays plus two extra payments.
  • “ONE says 200% of SMI, so I can pick a blog’s euro figure.” The official English wording on Plataforma ONE’s digital-nomad visa page is the multiplier, not a printed euro amount: the teleworker must show 200% of the SMI per month; the first family member 75% of the SMI; each additional member 25% of the SMI. How a post converts that into euros is a separate step.

Pack the income PDF against the page that will actually open your file. The folders are the same either way. The monthly number may not be.

Income math (September 2026)

Read this as two calculators on the same statute, not as two visas. Confirm the live consulate or UGE checklist before you book.

Two checklist cards for Spain’s 2026 telework visa income math: consulate-style €2,442 a month versus the common €2,849 annualised calculator
WhatFigureWhere it is written
2026 SMI€1,221 / month in 14 payments (annual comparison floor €17,094)Real Decreto 126/2026 / BOE-A-2026-3815, arts. 1 and 3
Official multiplierTeleworker 200% of SMI per month; first family member 75% SMI; each additional 25% SMIPlataforma ONE, Application for the Digital Nomad Visa
Consulate-style monthly€2,442 / mo alone (200% × €1,221). Washington also prints +€916 first family (75% × €1,221) and +€306 each additional (25% × €1,221)ONE’s 200% wording plus e.g. the Washington consulate telework page (“200% of monthly IMS = 2.442€”)
Common blog calculator~€2,849 / mo = €1,221 × 14 ÷ 12 × 2. Same 200% rule; they annualise the 14 pays first (€1,424.50 × 2)A method secondary sites use. It is not a second official threshold we found on ONE or on the Washington page

The €2,849 line is arithmetic, not an invention of this page: €1,221 × 14 = €17,094, the annual floor the decree itself writes; €17,094 ÷ 12 = €1,424.50; twice that is €2,849. Some blogs then also annualise the family add-ons (75% / 25% of €1,424.50). Washington does not — it applies 75% and 25% to the monthly €1,221. We are not picking a winner. We are telling you both methods exist, and that the post handling your file is the one that counts.

ONE’s visa FAQ also says the law does not lock a single proof format: contract, firm job offer, commercial contract for professional activity, payslips, or bank evidence can all appear, and you still have to show ownership, legality, and availability of the funds. That is not a licence to average three weak months with one fat invoice.

Snapshot: visa versus in-country residence

Spain split the product. The English ONE visa page is the consular door. The English ONE residence page is the in-country door (UGE-CE). Both sit under Law 14/2013 (international telework / digital nomads).

CheckVisa (consulate / mission)Residence authorisation (UGE-CE)
WhoThird-country national working remotely, exclusively by computer / telematic / telecom means, for companies outside SpainSame profile, already in a regular situation in Spain (visa-free 90/180, or any valid visa / stay)
Where you applySpanish diplomatic mission / consular post of your residence. ONE: national visa form, fee, in-person appointment (representative only in justified cases)UGE-CE electronic headquarters — ONE names the procedure “Submission of residence authorization applications for international mobility regulated by Law 14/2013.” Digital certificate or Cl@ve, or an authorised representative
Stay shapeONE: one-year visa. Washington: the visa is enough title to stay and work remotely for that year; a TIE is not required during visa validityONE: up to three years (or shorter if the contract is shorter). A TIE is expected after a residence grant. Washington: legally-in-Spain applicants can go straight to UGECE without a prior telework visa
Salary vs freelanceEmployees: only foreign employers. Self-employed: may also work for Spanish companies if that slice is ≤20% of total activity — ONE visa and residence pages use the same 20% line
Company / relationshipForeign company in real, continuous activity for at least one year; employment or professional relationship of at least three months; remote-work authorisation in writing

Washington’s telework page also says the visa does not cover work for individuals, international organisations, government agencies, universities, foundations, NGOs, or other non-profits. Treat that as that consulate’s published limit, not as a sentence we found on ONE. If your client is a foundation, read your own mission’s page before you invent a workaround.

Spain checklist: income, insurance, qualification, NIE, where to apply

Primary English hubs: ONE — Application for the Digital Nomad Visa and ONE — Residence Application for Digital Nomads. Documents in Spanish (or with a sworn translation). Foreign public documents: Hague Apostille or diplomatic legalisation. We are not reprinting a fee menu — ONE and each consulate publish their own, and reciprocity rates move.

Income pack

  • Lead applicant: show 200% of the 2026 SMI per month. On the consulate-style reading that is €2,442 (200% × €1,221). If the post that owns your appointment annualises 14 pays, they may want the ~€2,849 calculator instead. Ask them. Do not assume a blog rounded it for you.
  • Family: ONE: 75% of SMI for the first dependent, 25% of SMI for each additional. Washington’s 2026 printout of that monthly SMI is €916 and €306. Blogs that annualise the lead number sometimes annualise these too — another reason to use the checklist on the page you file against.
  • Proof: employment contract, firm offer, or commercial contract for the work you will actually do remotely; plus evidence the money is yours and available. Label the PDF so a case worker does not have to reverse-engineer your payroll app.

Salary versus freelance (the 20% line)

ONE draws the same split on both doors. A salaried teleworker works for companies located outside Spain. A self-employed teleworker may also take Spanish clients if that work is no more than 20% of total activity. The company certificate differs: employees need length of service (not less than three months) and express remote-work authorisation; freelancers need the length of the contractual relationship (not less than three months) and the remote terms. Registry proof that the foreign company has existed and operated for at least a year sits next to that letter.

Insurance

Public or private health insurance with a company authorised to operate in Spain, coverage equivalent to the National Health System, for the authorisation period or at least one renewable year. ONE’s visa and residence FAQs both say travel insurance is not valid in the ordinary case. The exception they describe: you do not have to show a private policy if you will be covered by the National Health System because of Social Security registration from an employment or professional relationship. Washington adds that the policy should not hide behind a copayment, deductible, or coverage cap that guts the “equivalent to SNS” claim, and it points at the DGSFP register of authorised insurers. Screenshot the territorial cover and the exclusion page. A home-country policy that silently excludes “residing abroad” is a refusal waiting to happen.

Degree or three years’ experience

ONE (visa): original and copy of a graduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised university, vocational-training institution, or reputable business school — or documents proving a minimum of three years of professional experience in roles similar to the international-telework job, equivalent to the required qualification and relevant to the remote work. Regulated professions need recognition of the qualification. Washington repeats the degree-or-three-years fork and wants foreign official documents apostilled or legalised, with a sworn Spanish translation.

NIE

ONE’s visa page: apply for a Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) at the same time as the visa, and it points at the ONE “NIE Application for International Individuals” note. Washington’s telework page is stricter in print: obtain the NIE first and bring the certificate of assignment with the visa file. Those two sentences can both be true for different posts. Do not land in Spain planning to “get the NIE at the extranjería on Monday” if your consulate already asked for it on the appointment checklist.

Social Security (do not skip the PDF)

ONE wants a responsible declaration that Social Security obligations will be met before work starts. Salaried path: proof the company has applied to register in Spanish Social Security and that the worker will be affiliated. Freelance path: RETA registration (or the application). A bilateral Social Security agreement can replace Spanish registration with a certificate of applicable legislation from the origin country — that fact has to appear in the declaration. Washington notes that a non-resident without a Spanish electronic certificate or Cl@ve usually cannot file those registrations alone and will need an authorised representative in Spain. We are describing the document, not selling a gestor.

Where to apply

  • Outside Spain: the Spanish consulate / mission for your legal residence. ONE’s visa steps: national visa form (one per person), pay the fee, book the appointment, collect the visa within one month of the favourable notice or it is cancelled. Washington’s local practice (from 1 September 2026) is in-person by appointment at BLS Washington — that is a district rule, not a national one. Your mission’s page wins.
  • Already legally in Spain: ONE residence page + UGE-CE sede electrónica. Washington: visa-free nationals (its example: US passport holders on 90/180) and holders of any valid visa can file the residence authorisation with UGECE without first getting a telework visa. Filing while irregular is the thing the law says not to do; ONE says a pending residence application can extend the stay or residence you already hold until the file is decided.
  • After a one-year visa, if you stay: Washington describes applying for an initial residence authorisation at UGECE about two months before the visa expires, then a TIE. That is a second file, not an automatic sticker.

This week’s file (do this, then book)

  1. Pick the door. Outside Spain → consular visa (ONE visa page + your mission). Already legal in Spain → UGE residence (ONE residence page + sede electrónica). Do not treat a tourist stamp as a Spain version of “I’ll convert later” unless you are actually still in a regular situation and the UGE page still says that.
  2. Ask the post which monthly euro figure they want — €2,442 (monthly SMI × 2) or the ~€2,849 annualised calculator — and calculate family add-ons the way that page writes them.
  3. Income pack in one folder: 200% evidence, three-month relationship, one-year company activity, remote-work letter. Freelance: keep Spanish clients off the 20% cliff in the same PDF set.
  4. Insurance certificate that names an insurer authorised in Spain and the dates. Not a travel policy. Screenshot the exclusion page.
  5. Degree or three-year experience pack, apostille / legalisation, sworn translation. Same for the criminal-record certificate (last two years) plus the five-year responsible declaration ONE lists.
  6. NIE: follow the consulate’s order (with the visa, or before it). Put the appointment in the calendar first; the cheap fare second.

Ready to stop collecting screenshots? Open the live ONE digital-nomad visa page or the ONE residence page, dump the income-insurance-qualification trio into one PDF set, and book the channel that page names. Comparing Schengen options this year? The Croatia vs Greece visa checklist is the sibling file (Croatia €3,622.50/mo; Greece Type D / Z.1 before travel). After you land: data is not the visa, but it is the job

A one-year telework visa or a UGE residence card does not include a working mobile pipe. Match the eSIM to the calendar — a consulate week is not a visa-run month — with the trip-length eSIM checklist, then compare exact-day vs fixed packs on eSIMEcho’s Holafly note (if that slug is still warming up, start from the eSIMEcho blog). Keep the home line off roam-as-default; the failure-mode version is when your home carrier bans roaming.
