Italy Digital Nomad Visa: 2026 Income Floor and Consulate Variance

September 2026: the formula is 3× the healthcare-exemption threshold. Seoul’s English PDF does the math as €8,500 × 3 = €25,500. Confirm the euro printout with the consulate of residence.

If you Googled “Italy digital nomad visa income 2026” and one tab said €25,500 while another said ~€24,789, both camps are doing the same statutory formula — three times the healthcare-exemption threshold — they just disagree on which euro printout the consulate of residence is using this month. This is the September 2026 file note: income math, consulate variance, digital-nomad versus remote-worker, highly qualified plus six months’ experience, insurance, housing. It is a sourced summary, not legal advice and not a permit in your passport.

The pain: one 3× rule, two annual numbers

Nomad chats still paste a 2024 consulate PDF and call it the 2026 floor. Two of those screenshots will waste a slot:

  • “Italy prints one monthly number the way Spain and Portugal do.” It does not, on the pages we used. The implementing decree is an annual lawful-income floor: not less than three times the minimum level set for exemption from participation in healthcare costs. How a post converts that into euros is a separate step.
  • “Every Italian consulate shows €24,789.” Not in September 2026. The English PDF from the Italian Embassy in Seoul (September 2026) does the arithmetic in the open: currently €8,500 × 3 = €25,500. New York’s consular page and Washington’s February 2026 PDF still carry the older line “at the time of this writing in 2024… no less than 24,789 euros.”

Pack the income PDF against the page that will actually open your file. The folders are the same either way. The annual number may not be.

Income math (September 2026)

Read this as one formula with more than one consular printout, not as two visas. Confirm the live checklist for the post that handles your residence before you book.

Seoul printout (Sep 2026)€8,500 × 3 = €25,500 / yearAmb. Seoul, Visas for digital nomads and remote workers (EN, Sep 2026) — the same 3× sentence for both the digital-nomad and remote-worker lists
Older consulate printout~€24,789 / year (“at the time of this writing in 2024”)Consolato Generale d’Italia a New York; Embassy of Italy in Washington, Digital Nomad Visa/Remote Worker (Feb 2026 PDF) still uses that 2024 wording
Another 2026 printout€25,500 / yearItalian Embassy in Tbilisi (May 2026 EN PDF) — aligned with Seoul’s euro figure, not with New York’s 2024 line
Monthly arithmetic (not a published monthly floor)€25,500 ÷ 12 = €2,125 / mo; €24,789 ÷ 12 ≈ €2,066 / moDivision of the annual printouts. Italy’s decree and the Seoul PDF state an annual figure. Do not treat this row as a second official threshold
What countsIncome from the remote work you will perform in Italy. Passive streams (the U.S. pages’ examples: Social Security, rents, stocks) are not treated as that incomeNew York page; Washington Feb 2026 PDF. Seoul states the 3× annual floor without that parenthetical — use the post that owns your appointment

We are not picking a winner between €25,500 and €24,789. Seoul’s September 2026 English PDF is the freshest official printout we used that actually shows the €8,500 × 3 working. New York and Washington have not, on the pages above, replaced their 2024 euro line. Applicants must confirm with the consulate of residence. A file that only clears €24,789 is not automatically a Seoul-style file.

Proof on the U.S. pages: paystubs, tax return, W-2, or three most recent bank statements — that is those posts’ list, not a licence to average one fat invoice with two empty months. Seoul does not reprint that menu; it restates the annual 3× floor. Label the PDF so a case worker does not have to reverse-engineer your payroll app.

Snapshot: digital nomad versus remote worker

Italy split the product. Seoul’s English PDF: if the activity is self-employment, request the self-employment / digital nomad visa; if you have an employment contract, request the employed worker / remote worker visa. Both sit on highly qualified remote work through technological tools (art. 27-quater, Legislative Decree 286/98, as the Seoul PDF cites it). The implementing decree of 29 February 2024 is the nationwide requirements list underneath those checklists.

Extra employee lineNot this columnSeoul: annual salary not lower than national collective agreements, and in any case not lower than the ISTAT average gross annual salary it points at. Washington’s Feb 2026 PDF prints a separate €33,000 gross-salary line for this path — that is that mission’s figure, not a sentence we found on Seoul

The card wording is “nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto”; issued for a period not exceeding one year, renewable annually if the conditions still hold

The decree also says digital nomads request a VAT number (partita IVA). That is a document the gazette names. It is not tax advice, and it is not a reason to skip the income PDF.

Italy checklist: income, qualification, six months, insurance, housing, where to apply

Primary English hubs we used: the Amb. Seoul September 2026 EN PDF, the New York consular page, Washington’s February 2026 PDF, and the 29 February 2024 implementing decree. Documents in Italian (or with a certified translation) are the default on the Seoul qualification list for non-EU papers. We are not reprinting a fee menu — each post publishes its own, and they move.

Income pack (the 3× annual pattern)

  • Lead applicant: show lawful annual income of at least three times the healthcare-exemption threshold. On Seoul’s September 2026 printout that is €25,500. If the post that owns your appointment still shows ~€24,789, ask them which figure they want this month. Do not assume a blog rounded it for you.
  • From the work, not passive: New York and Washington state that the income must derive from the work you will perform in Italy. Passive examples they name (Social Security, rents, stocks) will not be considered. Seoul does not reprint that sentence; the decree says “lawful sources.” Use the stricter reading your post publishes.
  • Proof: the U.S. pages list paystubs, tax return, W-2, or three recent bank statements. Map the PDF onto the contract so a stranger can follow the money. Currency must be obvious.

Highly qualified (art. 27-quater) — high level, not a DIY audit

Seoul’s English PDF is the clearest 2026 list we used. You demonstrate highly qualified status in one of the ways it names — this is a field note, not a determination that you qualify:

  • A tertiary higher-education qualification for a course of at least three years, or a post-secondary professional qualification of at least three years / at least NQF level 6 under the 8 January 2018 labour-ministry decree Seoul cites.
  • The requirements for a regulated profession, certified by a competent Italian authority (Legislative Decree 206/2007 — Seoul points at the impresainungiorno.gov.it list).
  • A higher professional qualification shown by at least five years of experience at a level comparable to tertiary education, in the field of the work, with public-authority paperwork Seoul lists (company identity, position held, contracts/payslips, employer certification of dates).
  • For ICT managers / specialists in ISCO-08 groups 133 and 25 only: at least three years of relevant experience in the seven years before the application.

Non-EU educational and professional papers: Seoul wants a certified copy, apostille or legalisation, and an Italian translation certified as consistent with the original. For the degree, it allows a CIMEA comparability certificate in place of a Dichiarazione di Valore. New York and Washington describe a similar CIMEA / Declaration of Value fork. That is still not a finding that your degree is “highly qualified.”

Six months in the field

The decree and Seoul both want at least six months’ prior experience in the work you will do as a digital nomad or remote worker. That is a separate clock from the five-year / three-year highly-qualified experience paths. New York: invoices, tax returns, or professional-association membership can evidence the nomad path; payslips or an employer letter can evidence the employee path. Do not collapse “I have a degree” into “I have six months.”

Insurance

Seoul: health insurance covering medical treatment and hospitalisation, valid throughout Italian territory for the duration of the stay. It does not print a euro floor on that PDF. New York and Washington add repatriation and a €30,000 (or $50,000) minimum on their checklists, and they flag inadequate medical cover as a common refusal reason. Travel-policy wording that silently excludes “residing abroad” is still a refusal waiting to happen. Use the certificate your post asks for this month.

Housing / address

Seoul: a property ownership deed, or a lease agreement registered with the Revenue Agency. New York is stricter in print: the lease, rental contract, or deed in the applicant’s name for the visa duration; a registered contratto di locazione ad uso abitativo; a third party’s offer of hospitality or a hotel stay is unacceptable on that page. Have a stay you can document. Do not fly in, dump a suitcase in an Airbnb that cannot be registered, and assume Questura will wait.

Where to apply

  • Outside Italy: the Italian consulate / mission for your legal residence, on the digital-nomad or remote-worker list that post publishes. Seoul’s PDF is not a worldwide annex. Washington and New York still describe a short-stay (Schengen) versus national long-stay split on the same product — another post-level detail.
  • After you enter on the national visa: Questura permesso within eight working days (decree art. 4; New York and Washington repeat the same clock). The first card is not more than one year if granted. That is a second file, not an automatic sticker.
  • Family: the decree points at ordinary family-reunification rules (art. 29 TUI) rather than printing a euro add-on for a spouse. New York’s 2024-worded page says sponsorship of a spouse and a child under 18 starts in Italy at the Questura after the worker’s permesso — and that adult children and parents are not in that sentence. We did not find a household 3× stack on Seoul. Confirm with the post and the Questura; do not invent a family total from Spain’s 75% / 25% table.

A light contrast with Spain and Portugal

Italy’s 2026 printout can look cheaper by the month — €25,500 a year is €2,125 / mo of arithmetic — but the file is not “hit the number and go.” Highly qualified plus six months plus a registered lease is a higher bar than a spreadsheet cell. Spain’s telework visa is a different multiplier on a different wage: Plataforma ONE says 200% of SMI. Consulate-style math is €2,442 / mo; blogs that annualise 14 pays land near €2,849. That debate lives on the Spain digital-nomad visa income note. Portugal’s D8 is simpler arithmetic — 4 × €920 = €3,680 / mo over the last three months — and a higher monthly floor; Law 62/2026 did not abolish it. Side-by-side: the Spain vs Portugal digital-nomad visa comparison.

Comparing other Schengen options this year? The Croatia vs Greece visa checklist is the sibling file (Croatia €3,622.50/mo; Greece Type D / Z.1 before travel after Law 5275/2026).

This week’s file (do this, then book)

  1. Open the post that owns your residence. Seoul’s €25,500 working is not automatically New York’s €24,789 line. Screenshot the live PDF or HTML the week you book.
  2. Pick the door. Self-employed → digital-nomad visa. Employment contract → remote-worker visa, plus the contract / ISTAT-or-collective salary line / employer declaration that post lists.
  3. Income pack in one folder: annual 3× evidence from the remote work, not a rental statement. Currency obvious. Three-month bank trail if that is what the post asks for.
  4. Highly-qualified pack plus six months in the field — two different clocks. Apostille / legalisation / certified Italian translation where the post says so. CIMEA or Dichiarazione di Valore if that is the degree path.
  5. Insurance certificate that names the territory and the dates. If your post prints €30,000, meet that post’s sentence. Screenshot the exclusion page.
  6. Housing artefact: a deed or a Revenue-Agency-registered lease in the shape that post will accept. Put the consular appointment in the calendar first; the cheap fare second.

Ready to stop collecting screenshots? Open the live Amb. Seoul September 2026 EN PDF or the checklist on the Italian mission for your residence, dump the income-qualification-housing trio into one PDF set, and book the channel that page names. If the remote-work base is still the problem — income first, then a visa — back up to How to Become a Digital Nomad (2026).

After you land: data is not the visa, but it is the job

A one-year permesso does not include a working mobile pipe. Match the eSIM to the calendar — a consulate week is not a visa-run month — with the trip-length eSIM checklist, then compare exact-day vs fixed packs on eSIMEcho’s Holafly note (if that slug is still warming up, start from the eSIMEcho blog). Keep the home line off roam-as-default; the failure-mode version is when your home carrier bans roaming.
